Meniscus Tears

February 14, 2025

A meniscus tear is one of the most common knee injuries, affecting athletes, active individuals, and even older adults due to wear and tear.

What is a Meniscus Tear?
The meniscus is a C-shaped piece of cartilage in the knee that acts as a cushion between the femur (thighbone) and tibia (shinbone). Each knee has two menisci, one on the inner side (medial meniscus) and one on the outer side (lateral meniscus). The meniscus absorbs shock and helps stabilize the knee joint.

A meniscus tear occurs when this cartilage is damaged due to sudden twisting, forceful movement, or degeneration over time.

Common Causes of Meniscus Tears

  1. Sports Injuries
  2. Aging and Degeneration
  3. Sudden Trauma or Accidents
  4. Improper Movements or Lifting

Symptoms of a Meniscus Tear
The symptoms of a meniscus tear can vary depending on the severity of the injury. Some common signs include:

  1. Pain
  2. Swelling and Stiffness
  3. Locking and Catching
  4. Limited Range of Motion
  5. Popping sensation

Treatment Options for Meniscus Tears
The treatment approach depends on the severity, location, and type of tear.

Conservative (Non-Surgical) Treatment
For minor tears or individuals with degenerative tears, non-surgical treatment is often recommended, including:

  1. Rest
  2. Ice
  3. Compression and Elevation
  4. Physical Therapy
  5. Pain Medication

Surgical Treatment
If the tear is large, causing persistent symptoms, or affecting knee function, surgery may be necessary.
